Here is the short version, because the useful answer changes depending on what you are going to play. If you want the most performance per dollar and a device that behaves itself, that is the ASUS ROG Xbox Ally at $582.71. My bench is a tracked play space with frame-timing capture and comfort-session logging, which is a technical way of saying I record what a device does over an hour of real play rather than over a thirty second benchmark run. That distinction matters more in this category than in any other, because handhelds are the only computers most people own where the first two minutes of performance and the fortieth minute of performance are different numbers.

What follows is organised around the decision, not around a leaderboard. The criteria come first, then the devices, then the honest note on who each pick is wrong for.

Four different machines are hiding behind one search

Class one: x86 Windows handhelds. These are genuine personal computers with a controller welded to each side. The ROG Xbox Ally, the msi Claw A8 and the Lenovo Legion Go S sit here. They run your Steam library, Game Pass, Epic, emulators, mod managers and anything else Windows runs. They are also the heaviest, hottest, loudest and shortest-lived on battery, and they inherit every annoyance of a desktop operating system being asked to work on a screen the size of a paperback.

Class two: closed consoles. The Nintendo Switch 2 is the only example here. One company controls the chip, the operating system and the certification of every game on the store, which produces an experience the Windows devices structurally cannot match: you press the button and the game runs, at the settings the developer chose, every time. The cost is that you play what is in that catalogue and nothing else.

Class three: cloud and remote-play handhelds. The OnePro Cloud device belongs here. There is a screen, controls, a battery and a network stack, and essentially no rendering hardware. The five criteria that decide this purchase, in order of how much they cost you

Before any product names, settle these five. In six years of testing I have never seen a buyer regret a handheld because of the chip. I have seen plenty regret one because of items two through five.

1. Sustained wattage, not peak wattage. Every handheld exposes a power slider, usually somewhere between 9W and 30W. The top of that range is a burst figure. What the device delivers after twenty minutes is set by the fan, the heat pipe and the size of the chassis. In my logs, the jump from a 15W profile to a 25W profile is worth a large and obvious frame-rate gain across all three Windows devices here. The jump from 25W to the maximum is worth a fraction of that, and it costs you noise and roughly a third of your remaining battery.

2. Screen size versus weight. An 8 inch panel, as on the Claw A8 and the Legion Go S, is genuinely nicer to read and makes small UI text playable. It also means a larger, heavier device. My comfort logs are unambiguous on this: sessions over forty minutes on 8 inch handhelds produce noticeably more wrist and thumb complaints from testers with smaller hands than 7 inch devices do. 4. Which operating system you are willing to live with. Windows 11 gives you every launcher and every piece of software, and asks you to operate a desktop with your thumbs. 5. Where the device will actually be used. Docked on a desk with mains power is a completely different workload from a train seat. On mains, the expensive chip in the Claw A8 gets to show what it can do. On a train, every device here converges towards the same number because the constraint is the battery, not the silicon. Be honest about the ratio before you pay for headroom you will use twice a year.

How I tested, and what the numbers below mean

Each device ran the same routine: an hour of continuous play at each of three power profiles, with frame-time capture running throughout so I can see stutter rather than just averages, wall-socket and battery draw logged at the same interval, external surface temperature taken at the grips and at the vent at the fifteen and forty-five minute marks, and a comfort note recorded at the end of each session by the person holding it.

I quote frame rates as ranges rather than single figures. A single figure from a handheld is close to meaningless, because the same device at the same settings will produce different numbers depending on ambient temperature, whether it is charging, and how long it has been running. Ranges reflect what you will genuinely see across a session.

Where a platform does not expose power draw to software, I say so rather than guessing. That is the case for the Nintendo device, so its section below describes behaviour rather than wattage. I would rather leave a cell blank than fill it with a number I cannot stand behind.

Pick by what you play: the decision table

Read this table by starting from the middle column, not the price column. The right device is the one whose job matches yours.

Note what the table does not say. It does not say the $1249.99 device is five times the machine that the $249 device is, because for the job most people describe when they say “handheld”, it is not.

The eight devices, and who each one is wrong for

msi Claw A8 PC Gaming Handheld: AMD Ryzen Z2 Extreme

This is the most capable device here and the only one I would call genuinely fast. The Ryzen Z2 Extreme has more cores and more graphics resources than the Z2 A in the Ally or the Z2 Go in the Legion, and the 24GB of LPDDR5x gives the integrated graphics a memory allocation the 16GB devices cannot match. The 1TB NVMe drive means you are not curating your library in the first week, and the SD card reader gives you a cheap second tier for older games.

The specification that matters most and gets discussed least is Thunderbolt 4. It changes what this device is over a three-year horizon, because it means a single cable can carry an external display, storage and, if you choose to go that way, an external graphics enclosure. None of the other x86 handhelds here offer that path. At a desk with mains power and an external screen, this stops being a handheld and becomes a small desktop, and it is the only device in the group that does that convincingly.

In my sessions it also ran the hottest at the vent and drew the most power at every profile, which is what you would expect. The 8 inch panel is excellent and the device is correspondingly large. Battery life in demanding titles at high profiles sat at the bottom end of the range I quote for this class.

Who should not buy it: anyone whose honest answer to “where will I use this” is a sofa or a train. Same core device as the base Ally, listed at $789.99 with a hub included. The chip is the Ryzen Z2 A, memory is 16GB LPDDR5X, storage is a 512GB SSD, graphics are AMD RDNA 2, and connectivity covers Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.4, with a fingerprint reader for sign-in.

The reason to consider this listing rather than the cheaper one is if you have already decided that the device will spend part of its life connected to a monitor, a keyboard and wired peripherals. Docking is the one area where handhelds create a surprising amount of friction, and having the hub in the box removes a purchase decision, a compatibility question and a cable you would otherwise be researching for an evening.

Performance is identical to the base model. Nothing about the hub changes what the chip does when you are holding the device.

Who should not buy it: anyone who already owns a USB-C dock, or who has no plans to use a monitor. The $207 premium over the base Ally is convenience, not capability, and convenience should be priced honestly. If you want more performance for that money you are looking at the wrong end of the catalogue; buy the base Ally and put the difference towards storage.

Lenovo Legion Go S – 2025 Mobile Gaming Console

The Legion Go S is the interesting middle of this group. The 8 inch PureSight IPS panel at 120Hz is a real advantage over 7 inch devices for anything with dense UI, which in practice means strategy games, RPG inventory screens and anything ported from a desktop without menu scaling. The Ryzen Z2 Go sits below the Z2 Extreme in the Claw and is broadly comparable to the Z2 A in the Ally at the power levels this chassis sustains, and it arrives with 16GB of memory and 512GB of storage.

In my hands the build quality is the standout. The grips are deeper than the ASUS devices, which does more for a two-hour session than any frame-rate difference in this article. My comfort logs put it ahead of the Claw despite the similar screen size, because the weight distribution sits differently.

Where it disappoints is the same place all 512GB Windows handhelds disappoint. After the operating system and a couple of large installs, you are managing space. Budget for expansion on day one.

Who should not buy it: people with smaller hands, or anyone who plays primarily in bed or in transit. The 8 inch class is a desk-and-sofa proposition. Also skip it if you are cross-shopping purely on frames per dollar, because the base Ally at $582.71 gets you comparable performance for $84.88 less; you are paying that difference for the bigger panel and the better grips, which is a reasonable trade but should be a conscious one.

At $582.71 this is the device I recommend most often, and the one I reach for most often personally. The Ryzen Z2 A, 16GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD on a 7 inch 1080p 120Hz screen is the configuration that makes the most sense for how handhelds are genuinely used, and the three months of Xbox Game Pass Premium included in the box is a meaningful part of the value if you do not already subscribe, because it fills the device with playable content on day one without further spending.

The 7 inch form factor is the quiet advantage. Across my comfort sessions it produced the fewest complaints of any Windows device in this group, and comfort is what determines whether a handheld gets used after month three or lives in a drawer. Native 1080p on a 7 inch panel is also a sensible pixel budget for a chip in this class; the same chip pushing an 8 inch panel is doing more work for a display you hold at the same distance.

Sustained behaviour is where it earns its place. It does not have the ceiling of the Claw A8, but it holds its mid-range power profile steadily, and stable frame delivery reads better in the hand than a higher average with visible dips. My frame-time captures show a tighter distribution here than on the more powerful device at comparable settings, largely because there is less thermal headroom being chased.

Who should not buy it: anyone who intends to drive an external 1440p or 4K display, or who wants an external GPU path. The Z2 A will bottleneck at higher resolutions in a way the Z2 Extreme will not, and there is no Thunderbolt escape hatch. Also skip it if you have already decided you want the biggest screen available, because a 7 inch panel is a 7 inch panel and no amount of value argument changes that.

Nintendo Switch 2 System

Including a closed console in a handheld PC comparison is deliberate, because a large share of the people searching for the most powerful handheld are describing a want that this device satisfies better than any PC handheld: playing good games, portably, without configuring anything.

What you get at $499 is a platform where every title on the store has been certified to run on the exact hardware in your hands. There is no power slider, no settings menu to negotiate, no driver, no launcher, no Windows update landing mid-session. It docks to a television and it is the only device in this group with a first-party exclusive catalogue that is not available anywhere else. I did not run my usual wattage sweeps on it because the platform does not expose power draw to software, and I am not going to publish a number I cannot measure.

Who should not buy it: anyone whose motivation is playing games they already own on Steam, or who wants to tinker. Buying a closed console and then resenting that it is closed is the most predictable disappointment in this category. It is also the wrong choice if the appeal was raw performance, because that is explicitly not what you are paying for.

OnePro Cloud Handheld Portable Remote Play Gaming Console

The $272.99 cloud handheld is the device most likely to be either brilliant or useless for you, with very little middle ground. It has a 7 inch 1080p touchscreen, 64GB of storage and a battery that lasts because the device is barely working. Its job is to display frames rendered by Xbox Cloud Gaming, GeForce NOW, a PlayStation, or your own gaming PC.

On a good home network, with the host machine on Ethernet and the handheld on 5GHz Wi-Fi in the same building, remote play is a far better experience than most people expect. You get the full output of a desktop GPU on a cool, silent, light device that runs for hours. For a household that already owns a capable gaming PC, that is a genuinely clever $272.99.

Away from that network, the picture changes completely. Every frame has to arrive over the connection you happen to be sitting on, and hotel, cafe and mobile connections vary in ways you cannot control. Latency, not bandwidth, is the thing that ruins it, and latency is exactly the property that public networks handle worst. Who should not buy it: anyone without a strong home network or a subscription they already use, anyone who plays competitive shooters where a few tens of milliseconds decide encounters, and anyone buying a handheld specifically for flights, trains and holidays. Offline, this device does very little.

Retroid Pocket 5 Retro Handheld Game Console

At $249 with a Snapdragon 865, Adreno 650 graphics, 8GB of memory, 128GB of storage, a 5.5 inch 1080p touchscreen and Android 13, this is the specialist that beats the generalists at its own job. For emulation up to and around the sixth console generation, a mature mobile chip on Android is simply a better tool than a Windows x86 handheld: the emulator apps are excellent, the power draw is a fraction, and the device stays cool and quiet.

The 5.5 inch screen makes it genuinely pocketable in a way nothing else here is, and Wi-Fi 6 with Bluetooth 5.1 means it also works as a competent remote-play client if you want that occasionally. In my sessions it ran for several hours on emulated libraries without the fan noise or the heat that defines the Windows devices.

The limits are real and worth stating. It will not run modern PC games. It will not run Windows software. Higher-generation emulation is variable and depends on the specific title and emulator maturity rather than on the hardware alone, which means research per game rather than a blanket promise.

Who should not buy it: anyone expecting to play current PC releases, and anyone who wants a single device that does everything. It is a superb second device and a poor only device if your library is modern.

MANGMI AIR X Android Handheld Game Console

At $145.99 with a 5.5 inch FHD IPS screen, 4GB of memory and 64GB of storage, this is the cheapest way into the category and it behaves accordingly. For older libraries and light Android titles it does the job, and for a first handheld bought for a teenager or as a travel throwaway that is a defensible spend.

The 4GB of memory is the ceiling you will hit first. Heavier emulator cores and multitasking are where that number bites, and no amount of tuning fixes it. Storage at 64GB fills quickly once you start adding libraries, so plan for a card.

I include it because the honest shape of this market is a curve, not a ladder, and the bottom of the curve is where a lot of people should actually be shopping. If the real requirement is a few hundred old games in a pocket, spending $1249.99 to achieve that is a mistake that the phrase “most powerful” encourages people to make.

Who should not buy it: anyone who has ever described themselves as fussy about performance, anyone planning to emulate later generations, and anyone who would be irritated by build quality at this price. If your budget can stretch to the Retroid Pocket 5, the extra $103 buys a substantially more capable device rather than a marginally better one.

What each hundred dollars actually buys as you move up

Rank the x86 devices by price and the increments look like this, which is a more useful way to see the money than a raw benchmark chart.

The two steps worth scrutinising are the first and the last. Spending $103 to move from the AIR X to the Retroid Pocket 5 is the best value transition in the entire table. Spending $460 to move from a well-specified Ally to the Claw A8 is the one that most needs justifying, and it is justified only by docked use, external hardware plans or a specific need for the larger memory pool.

Docked performance is the number nobody quotes

Every performance figure people argue about for handhelds is a battery figure, and roughly a third of real-world use in the households I have surveyed happens on mains power connected to a screen. Those are different machines.

On mains, the power slider stops being a compromise between frames and runtime and becomes a straightforward question of what the cooling can sustain. This is where the Claw A8 separates itself from the rest of the group, and where the gap between a Z2 Extreme and a Z2 A becomes something you can see rather than something you read. It is also where the 24GB memory pool starts paying, because driving an external display at higher than 1080p increases the graphics allocation you need.

The corollary is uncomfortable for the expensive device: if you do not dock, you have bought a ceiling you will not reach. My advice is to work out the ratio before you buy. If the answer is that the device lives in a bag and comes out on trains, the base Ally is not a compromise, it is the correct machine, and the $460 saved buys a lot of games. Memory and storage decide your settings more often than the chip does

These devices have no dedicated video memory. The system memory is the graphics memory, split dynamically or by a setting depending on the platform. That single fact explains a large share of the performance complaints I see in handheld communities.

With 16GB, as on the Ally and the Legion Go S, a typical split leaves a comfortable graphics allocation for 1080p at moderate texture settings and enough headroom for the operating system and a launcher. Push texture quality to its maximum, or run a browser and a mod manager alongside your game, and you will find the ceiling. With the 24GB in the Claw A8, that ceiling moves far enough away that you stop thinking about it.

Storage compounds the issue in a less obvious way. When a 512GB drive is nearly full, sustained write behaviour degrades and shader compilation stutter gets worse, which shows up in frame-time captures as spikes rather than a lower average. A device with a 1TB drive is not just holding more games; it is spending more of its life in a healthier part of its performance curve. If you buy a 512GB device, buy expansion early rather than when it is already full, and read the battery life explainer alongside it, because storage activity and power draw are more closely related than most buyers expect.

Latency is the specification the cloud device lives or dies by

For the OnePro Cloud handheld, and to a lesser extent for anyone using the other devices as remote-play clients, the only number that matters is end-to-end latency: the time from your thumb moving to the corresponding pixel changing on the panel.

That budget is made up of input polling, network transit both ways, encode on the host, decode on the handheld and the panel’s own response. Each stage is small. Added together on a good local network they land in a range that most single-player games tolerate well and that fast competitive games do not. Add a congested access point, and the same stack becomes unplayable, not because average latency rose slightly but because its variability rose sharply. Inconsistent latency feels far worse than consistently higher latency, which is the same principle that makes frame-time consistency matter more than average frame rate on the local devices.

Practical guidance from my testing: get the host machine onto Ethernet, put the handheld on a 5GHz band with a clear path to the access point, and test with the games you actually play before you decide the device works. A cloud handheld that is brilliant for a slow-paced RPG can be genuinely unpleasant for a shooter on the same network in the same room.

Weight, grips and the hour-long session

My comfort-session logging exists because specification sheets have no column for the thing that determines whether a device gets used. Across six years, the pattern is consistent: buyers over-index on screen size and under-index on how the device feels at minute fifty.

The 8 inch devices, the Claw A8 and the Legion Go S, give you a better view and a heavier object. Of the two, the Legion’s deeper grips distribute that weight more kindly, and it consistently scored better in my sessions. The 7 inch Ally is the most comfortable of the Windows machines by a clear margin, and the 5.5 inch Android devices are in another category entirely, light enough that comfort stops being a consideration at all.

There is a specific trap here. People try a handheld in a shop for four minutes, decide the bigger screen is obviously better, and buy the heavier device. Four minutes is not the test. If you can, hold whichever you are considering for twenty minutes with your arms unsupported, which is how you will hold it on a sofa, and see whether the conclusion survives.

Three buyers who should not shop in this category at all

The buyer who wants desktop performance. If your standard is 1440p at high refresh with settings turned up, nothing portable will satisfy you, including the $1249.99 device. The physics of a chassis this size and a battery this small do not permit it. Buy a desktop and, if you want portability, add the $272.99 cloud handheld as a client. That combination costs less than a Claw A8 and delivers far more.

The buyer who only plays two or three modern multiplayer titles. Anti-cheat compatibility on handheld operating systems remains inconsistent, and a device that cannot run the only game you play is an expensive paperweight. Check compatibility for your specific titles before spending anything.

The buyer who wants a device that never needs attention. Windows handhelds require maintenance: driver updates, launcher updates, per-game settings, power profiles. What I would buy, and with which money

With my own money and no docking plans, I buy the ASUS ROG Xbox Ally at $582.71 and put roughly $60 towards storage expansion. It is the most comfortable of the Windows devices, its 7 inch 1080p panel matches the chip sensibly, the three-month Game Pass Premium inclusion is real value, and its frame delivery is more consistent than devices that cost considerably more.

If my handheld would spend most of its life on a desk next to a monitor, I buy the msi Claw A8 at $1249.99 without hesitation. The Z2 Extreme, 24GB of memory, 1TB drive and Thunderbolt 4 make it the only device here with a credible three-year upgrade path, and docked is exactly where that specification stops being theoretical.

If I wanted the 8 inch screen without the Claw’s price, the Lenovo Legion Go S at $667.59 is the correct pick, and its grips are the best in the group.

If someone tells me they want to play good games portably and does not want to think about any of the above, I recommend the Nintendo Switch 2 System at $499 and I do not consider that a lesser recommendation.
